We’ve Got Tips on How to Keep Your Home Free from Ants

According to the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), ants are the number one concern of homeowners across the country. This isn’t surprising, considering ant colonies have an average of 5,000 members, yikes! Here at Graduate, we strongly advise homeowners to stay on top of potential ant issues before they get serious. But how can you keep ants away?

Kitchen

Ants love to feed on sticky sweets and fruit in addition to grease, oil, meats, and corn meal. Sticky jars are especially attractive to these hungry invaders.

  • Pro tip: Wipe down counters and sweep regularly to clean up spills and crumbs.

Bathroom

Moisture makes bathrooms highly susceptible to infestations. Carpenter ants, a wood-destroying species, have a tendency to build nests in damp areas, like behind bathroom tiles or under sinks.

  • Pro tip: Repair leaky pipes, and check under sinks for areas of moisture buildup.

Backyard

Ants nest under rocks, inside rotting logs, and under piles of bricks or timber.

  • Pro tip: Keep yard and shrubbery well-groomed, and store firewood at least 20 feet away from your house.

Driveway/Walkway

Ants, especially pavement ants love to build their nests underneath concrete slabs, sidewalks and driveways.

  • Pro tip: Eliminate standing water around these areas and ensure gutters and downspouts are functioning properly to make these areas less attractive to nest building here.

Don’t forget, ants are social insects, so if you see one or two, chances are they have friends nearby. Don’t wait for the ants to eat you out of house and home! If you suspect an infestation, feel free to give Graduate Pest Solutions a call. We’ll keep ants away from your home.
