Signs of a Carpenter Ant Infestation
Ants may be out in full-force during the spring and summer, but did you know that carpenter ants are active year round? That’s right, while other ants die off or become dormant during the winter, carpenter ants can stay active so long as their nests are warm enough. Colonies located in a nice warm location (like your home!) can therefore thrive all year long. Carpenter ants chew through wood to create tunnels and nests, and prefer wood that is wet or decaying. Considering they can do serious damage to the structural integrity of a building, it’s important for all homeowners in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut to recognize the signs that carpenter ants have invaded. But what are the signs of a carpenter ant infestation?
The signs of a carpenter ant infestation
- Swarmers. Carpenter ant swarmers are winged ants that leave the colony in order to establish new nests. These are the ones you’ll be most likely to physically see, usually creeping out from walls, ceilings, or other crevices.
- Frass. Carpenter ants expel wood shavings, called frass, as they tunnel through wood. These fragments may look like sawdust, but upon closer inspection, you’ll see tiny pieces of ant bodies, or shed wings from ant swarmers.
- Sound. With so many ants chewing through woods, it can get noisy! A rustling noise coming from the walls or hollow doors can be a good indication of an infestation.
Prevention is Key to an Infestation-Free Home
Other than knowing the signs of a carpenter ant infestation, it’s important to keep an eye out for any leaks around the home. Carpenter ants prefer wood that has been softened by moisture, so regularly check for excess moisture and rotting wood.
