After a few grueling weeks of freezing temps, warmer weather is around the corner. Homeowners in Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut might soon be overrun with ants, spiders, cockroaches, rodents, and more! While they might pose health risks, some can carry certain diseases, like salmonella and hantavirus. Starting to prepare for Spring now can make a huge difference.

Keep the Outside, Outside

Prepare for Spring by sealing foundation cracks and openings with wire, mesh, and mortar. Clean up around the yard and make it less appealing to mice, termites, spiders, and ticks. Move firewood away from structures at least 20 feet from the house and brush off the wood before bringing it indoors. Prevent ice dams by cleaning gutters. Remove debris including dead bushes, branches, or fallen leaves from last Fall to prepare for Spring. Check yourself and pets after walks or playtime with other animals as fleas and ticks can jump from host to host. Vacuum floors and furniture frequently. Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.

Prevent Meltdown

One of the most common issues that cause Spring pests is copious amounts of ice melting. Many problematic pests thrive in moist environments. Water-soaked lumber in your home’s structure can draw termites that can cause serious damage to your home. Check pipes and plumbing for any leaks, clean up spills, and repair places where water could be getting into the home. Areas of standing water will become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and good foraging locations for termites, which could increase the likelihood of both.

Clean Kitchen, Clean Home

Many insects are attracted to the inside of your home by the same food you eat! Make sure you clean up the kitchen after each meal, dispose of garbage regularly and store food items in airtight containers. Don’t forget to check your pantry and clean out any old or expired food, especially if it hasn’t been sealed. There are things more unnerving than bugs emerging from old cereal, flour, or a box of crackers. Mouse droppings are a close second. Spills can leave a sticky residue which is just as appealing for some bugs. Sweeping and mopping frequently can cut down on the crumbs that rodents and ants seek out.
