Indian Meal Moth

The Indian meal moth earned its name when an entomologist observed it consuming corn meal, commonly referred to as an Indian meal. Adult moths typically span from five-eighths to three-fourths of an inch from wingtip to wingtip.

Indian meal moths have a preference for consuming dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, chocolate, candies, birdseed, dog food, powdered milk, dried red peppers, and sweets.

Sawtooth Beetle

The sawtooth beetle is small, measuring 1/10 inch in length, with a flattened brown body. Its pronotum, the segment just behind the head, exhibits characteristic "sawtoothed" outer margins, adorned with six "teeth" on each side.

Their mouthparts are adapted for chewing. Adults typically infiltrate stored grains, flour, sugar, nuts, and other dry plant materials through cracks and crevices in imperfectly sealed containers. They are not capable of attacking sound grain kernels and often inhabit food previously infested by other stored product pests. Infestations may occur in dry goods, with beetles crawling around kitchen surfaces.

Cigarette Beetles

Cigarette beetles are small, typically measuring between 2 to 3 mm (approximately 1/8 of an inch) in length, and exhibit a reddish-brown hue. They possess a rounded, oval shape, with the head often obscured by the pronotum, the plate covering the first region of the thorax when viewed from above. Their elytra, or wing covers, are adorned with fine hairs. When disturbed, they have a tendency to retract their legs, withdraw their heads, and remain motionless. These beetles favor dark or dimly lit cracks, nooks, and crevices for habitat, yet they become active and take flight readily in well-lit, open areas, likely in search of shelter. Their peak activity is observed at dusk, persisting throughout the night. While adults do not actively feed, they do consume liquids.

The antennae of the cigarette beetle possess serrations akin to the teeth of a saw.
